Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre Update

Brockenhurst College took over the running of the Hengistbury Centre on the 1st September 2009 and will open the Centre to the general public on the 1st April 2010.

During the winter months work has been completed on refurbishing both large changing rooms and showers; the creation of an instructors’ shower area, and new large water tanks and water heaters have been installed.

To enable more activities to take place during low tides, additional swinging moorings have been obtained further down the river. It is also intended to replace the big slipway before April. A moveable floating dock is to be positioned where required on a daily basis.

The list of activities new to the Centre includes: sea kayaking, windsurfing, archery, climbing, survival, VHF radio courses and first aid training.

The Centre will be open daily and it is anticipated that there will be 1,000 courses in the 2010 brochure, which is due to be published shortly. Generally course prices will be kept similar to last year.

Four members of the Hengistbury CIC (Paul Clarke, Bill Howlett, Mark Merritt and Lyn Moreland) are now on the Executive Committee of the Hengistbury Head Centre Association (HHCA). They attend monthly meetings in order to continue their active involvement with the Centre and to ensure that the contract between Bournemouth Borough Council and Brockenhurst College is maintained in the best interests of all those who wish to use the Centre.

The Hengistbury Centre Community Interest Company

A group of local residents has formed a Community Interest Company (CIC) in a bid to secure the future of the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre.

The CIC aims to take over the running of the Centre from Bournemouth Council on a ‘not-for-profit-basis’ and to maintain the courses offered at similar prices for the benefit of local people, school groups and others who want to continue to make use of the facilities at this unique site.
